The River Soar is the navigable waterway linking the River Trent at Trent Junction to the Grand Union Canal at Leicester, covering 65 kilometres through the East Midlands. Managed by the Canal & River Trust, the river passes through Loughborough and the market town of Barrow-upon-Soar before entering Leicester through a series of locks. The navigation is quiet and underrated — far less trafficked than the major canals — making it a popular choice for liveaboards who want peace and reasonable proximity to East Midlands cities. Leicester's waterfront has seen significant regeneration, and moorings near the city centre offer easy access to the city's diverse food scene, cultural quarter, and good rail connections. The river connects north to the Erewash Canal (via the Trent) and south to the Leicester arm of the Grand Union.
