The Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation is the principal waterway of South Yorkshire, running 59 kilometres from Sheffield's Victoria Quays Marina north-east through Rotherham, Mexborough and Doncaster before joining the River Trent at Keadby. Created from a merger of several historic navigations including the River Don Navigation and Stainforth & Keadby Canal, the system is broad-beam throughout — locks of generous commercial dimensions (around 60 metres) suit wide-beam liveaboards, motor cruisers and the occasional commercial barge that still works the route. For boat owners, the SSYN offers one of the best urban-rural mixes on the inland network: Sheffield's Victoria Quays is a magnificent restored canal basin with apartments, restaurants and city-centre walkability; the route then opens into broad rural reaches through the Don Valley before reaching the working tidal Trent. Long-stay moorings are available at Victoria Quays Marina, Rotherham (Aldwarke Lock), Doncaster (Strawberry Island Boat Club), Thorne Marina and Keadby. The connection to the Trent at Keadby Lock opens the entire eastern broad-beam network. Liveaboards enjoy strong rail connectivity at Sheffield (London St Pancras in 2 hours via the Midland Main Line), Rotherham and Doncaster (East Coast Main Line). Excellent value moorings, real broad-beam cruising and a genuine northern character.
