The River Yare is the principal navigation of the Norfolk Broads, flowing 96 kilometres from its source near Dereham eastward through the city of Norwich, Brundall, Cantley and Reedham to meet the Waveney at Breydon Water and discharge into the North Sea at Great Yarmouth. As the broadest, deepest and most heavily cruised of the Broads rivers, the Yare suits a wide range of craft — traditional Broads cruisers, sailing yachts, motor cruisers, and even sea-going vessels coming in from Yarmouth. For boat owners, the Yare offers the full Broads cruising experience plus access to the city of Norwich at the head of navigation. Long-stay moorings are available at Norwich Yacht Station (right beside the cathedral), Brundall (the largest concentration of Broads boatyards and marinas), Cantley, Reedham Quay and Burgh Castle Marina near Yarmouth. The river is tidal throughout, with passage planning across Breydon Water requiring tide-and-weather attention. Wildlife is exceptional — bitterns, marsh harriers, otters and the rare swallowtail butterfly all live in the surrounding reedbeds and fens. Norwich gives proper city amenity (Cathedral, Castle, restaurants, rail to London Liverpool Street in under 2 hours), while the lower river through Berney Marshes and Reedham is wonderfully wild. A characterful, varied liveaboard waterway.
