The River Thames is the longest river entirely within England and by far the most famous, flowing 346 kilometres from its source near Cirencester in the Cotswolds to the tidal estuary at Teddington, and on through London to the sea at Southend. For boaters, the non-tidal Thames — managed by the Environment Agency between Teddington and Lechlade — offers some of the most beautiful river cruising in England, winding through meadows, ancient market towns, and the dreaming spires of Oxford. The tidal Thames below Teddington is managed by the Port of London Authority and brings a different set of challenges and rewards, with strong tides, commercial traffic, and access to the open sea. Long-stay moorings are available at numerous marinas and boatyards along the entire length, with the highest demand (and highest prices) in Greater London and the affluent commuter belt between Windsor and Chiswick.
