The River Severn is the longest river in the UK, flowing 354 kilometres from its source in the Welsh mountains to the Severn Estuary, which has the second highest tidal range in the world. The navigable section extends from Stourport-on-Severn in the Midlands southward through Worcester, Tewkesbury, and Gloucester to the tidal limit, giving boaters access to a dramatic and sometimes challenging river with strong currents and significant flood potential. Long-stay moorings on the Severn are available at marinas in Stourport, Worcester, and Gloucester, with the canal connections at Stourport (Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal) and Gloucester (Gloucester & Sharpness Canal) providing onward routes into the national network. The tidal estuary beyond Gloucester is navigable for seagoing vessels but requires careful planning of tides and weather.
