The Kennet & Avon Canal connects the River Thames at Reading with the River Avon at Bath, forming a 141-kilometre waterway link between the South East and the South West of England. After decades of abandonment following railway competition in the Victorian era, the canal was painstakingly restored by volunteers and opened to full navigation in 1990 — one of the great waterway restoration stories in British history. The canal passes through some of the finest countryside in southern England: the Vale of Pewsey, the Savernake Forest, the Avon Valley, and the Georgian terraces of Bath. The Caen Hill flight of 29 locks near Devizes is one of the most dramatic engineering features on the entire canal network. Long-stay moorings are available at marinas in Newbury, Devizes, Bradford-on-Avon, and Bath, with visitor moorings throughout.
