The Erewash Canal runs 19 kilometres along the historic Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire border, climbing from Trent Lock — where the River Trent, the Soar and the Trent & Mersey converge — northward through Long Eaton and Sandiacre to its current head of navigation at Langley Mill. Managed by the Canal & River Trust, this largely rural waterway threads through former mining villages and pockets of regenerated industrial heritage, offering a quieter alternative to the busier Trent & Mersey just to the south. For boat owners, the Erewash is a popular long-stay base thanks to its modest length (well-priced moorings, easy circular cruises) and its strategic junction position — you can be on the Trent in minutes for big-river cruising, or take a Four Counties Ring or Leicester Ring trip without long transit. Long-stay moorings are available at Sandiacre Lock, Stenson Marina nearby on the Trent & Mersey, and at Langley Mill Boat Yard at the head of navigation. Several active boating clubs run social moorings along the route. The canal passes through Erewash Valley Country Park, with good towpath walking and cycling, and connections to the Great Northern Greenway. Pubs, supermarkets and rail at Long Eaton (direct to London, Derby and Nottingham) make it a practical liveaboard waterway, particularly for boaters seeking value in the East Midlands.
