The Birmingham Canal Navigations (BCN) is one of the most remarkable waterway systems in the world — a dense, 160-kilometre network of canals threading through Birmingham and the surrounding Black Country, connecting hundreds of former factories, warehouses, and wharves. Often quoted as having more miles of canal than Venice, the BCN is the beating heart of England's waterway network, connecting to all the major long-distance routes: the Grand Union, the Trent & Mersey, the Staffs & Worcs, the Coventry Canal, and the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal. The regenerated Gas Street Basin and Brindleyplace in the city centre are the most popular mooring areas, offering a vibrant urban setting with restaurants, bars, and cultural venues within walking distance. Further afield on the BCN, more industrial and characterful moorings are available for boaters who want to explore the network's heritage.
